Staff Picks: Kumano Kodo Hiking

This week’s staff pick is from travel consultant Younghee, who shares her experience walking the Kumano Kodo, one of Japan’s most famous hiking trails.

Looking to get off the beaten path? Want to walk through some of Japan’s most beautiful forests? If you’re looking for peace and tranquility while you’re hiking the Kumano Kodo is the place for you.

A walk through the woods

The Kumano Kodo is an ancient pilgrimage trail in the mountains of Wakayama, Japan. Wakayama Prefecture is located just to the south of Osaka, but is far more rural than its metropolitan neighbor.

Originally constructed to serve as a pilgrimage route between the three Grand Shrines of Kii Peninsula, the trail network called “Kumano Kodo” is actually made up of several routes that have been used for over a millennium. The area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004 for its cultural importance and natural beauty. I chose the Nakahechi Route because I had only 3 days to travel.

The ride from Osaka to Nachi was pretty long, but you can see beautiful views of the coast from the train.

Unfortunately the weather was not very good while we were hiking, often raining with lots of mist. However, it gave depth to the surroundings and made everything more mysterious!

Shrines and waterfalls are a striking combination

The trails are generally well-preserved and easy to navigate. You can absorb the quiet atmosphere while following in the footsteps of countless pilgrims and catching glimpses of Japanese culture. There are also minshuku, or Japanese lodging houses, along the route, so camping is not required. Some even have natural onsen (hot springs)!

Time for the uphill!
Finding peace in the trees

If you’ll be in the Kansai Region but want to escape the city for a few days, I recommend trying a hike along the Kumano Kodo. It will be an experience you won’t soon forget!
